The short answer
Dalaman Airport is usually the shorter road option for Kas and Kalkan, while Antalya Airport can offer a different flight schedule, airline or fare. The best overall choice depends on the complete journey: departure airport, landing time, luggage, group size and the road transfer after arrival.
When Dalaman makes sense
DLM is practical for Fethiye, Kalkan, Patara and Kas arrivals from the west. It is particularly attractive when a direct flight lands at a convenient hour. Read the Dalaman–Kas guide and Dalaman–Kalkan guide.
When Antalya makes sense
AYT can be the better travel decision when it provides a direct flight, better baggage conditions or a much more convenient schedule. It also suits itineraries that include Çıralı, Olympos, Adrasan or Demre before Kas. See the Antalya–Kas guide.
Compare the whole trip
- Airfare and baggage allowance
- Arrival time and airport terminal
- Road transfer and final villa address
- Children, sports equipment and group size
Aslar Travel offers private transfers from both airports with fixed-price confirmation, flight tracking, TURSAB licensing and 20 years of local experience.
Start with the flight, not only the map
Road distance matters, but the best airport is the one that produces the most reliable whole journey. Compare direct flight availability, arrival time, baggage allowance, seasonal frequency and the road transfer together. A shorter transfer can lose its advantage if the flight requires a long connection, an overnight airport stay or a difficult departure time.
Dalaman Airport usually provides the shorter road approach to Kalkan and Kas. Antalya Airport often offers a wider selection of international services and can be the sensible choice when it gives a direct flight or better travel day. The answer should be based on your exact dates rather than a universal rule.
How the two road routes differ
From Dalaman, the journey reaches the Fethiye and Seydikemer side before continuing toward Kalkan and Kas. From Antalya, the road runs west along the Mediterranean corridor through the Kemer region, past the approaches for Çıralı and Olympos, then toward Finike and Demre. Both routes use long intercity roads, but they approach the destination from opposite directions.
This difference matters when an itinerary contains several stops. A holiday beginning in Fethiye and ending in Kas may suit arrival through Dalaman. A trip starting around Çıralı, Olympos or Demre and finishing in Kas may make Antalya more logical. The airport should support the whole route, not only the final hotel.
Best airport for Kalkan and Patara
Dalaman is normally the practical first choice for Kalkan because it approaches from the Fethiye side. It is also convenient for Patara and Gelemiş. Antalya remains useful when flight schedules are significantly better or when the holiday includes Demre and the eastern Lycian coast before Kalkan.
Check the actual accommodation. A central Kalkan hotel, a villa in Kalamar, an upland property in Islamlar or Bezirgan and a Patara address in Gelemiş all add different final access. The airport comparison should include that last section instead of measuring only to the town name.
Best airport for Kas
Dalaman is generally shorter by road for central Kas, the Çukurbağ Peninsula and western approaches. Antalya can still be competitive as a complete travel option when it provides a direct or better-timed flight. It is also natural for travellers combining Kas with Demre, Kekova, Olympos or the coast east of town.
For Setur Marina, diving centres and hillside villas, provide the exact point. The final access does not change which airport is geographically closer, but it changes pickup timing, vehicle planning and the realistic door-to-door duration.
What if your holiday is centred on Fethiye?
For Fethiye, Çalış, Göcek, Ölüdeniz, Kayaköy, Ovacık, Faralya and Kabak, Dalaman is normally the clear road choice. Antalya involves a much longer cross-regional journey. It may still be used if flights, a multi-stop itinerary or international connections make it necessary, but travellers should understand the additional road time.
Faralya and Kabak require their own mountain access after the Fethiye area. When comparing airport transfers, do not stop the calculation at Fethiye centre. Ask the accommodation whether a local shuttle or roadhead handover is required.
Arrival time can change the practical answer
A daytime arrival offers easier hotel communication and more flexibility for a long transfer. A late arrival may favour the airport with the simpler direct flight even if the road is longer. Check whether the accommodation has night reception and whether children or older passengers will be comfortable after the total flight and road schedule.
Very early return flights create the opposite issue. Count backwards from departure, check-in and road conditions. The shorter airport transfer may reduce an overnight pickup, while a better flight time from the farther airport can sometimes provide a more comfortable morning.
Compare total cost, not only the airfare
Include airfare, checked luggage, airport parking at the origin, the private road transfer, possible overnight accommodation and the value of travel time. A cheaper flight can become more expensive once a hotel or extra connection is added. For a family or group, a fixed private transfer price per vehicle can also compare differently with per-person public transport.
Request quotations using the same passenger count, luggage, child seats, hotel and travel date. A town-centre estimate should not be compared with a door-to-door villa quotation. Written details make the comparison fair.
One airport in and another airport out
An open-jaw plan can work well for a linear coastal holiday. For example, visitors can arrive at Antalya, stay around Olympos or Demre, continue to Kas and Kalkan, then depart from Dalaman. The reverse direction is also possible. This avoids returning along the whole coast simply to use the same airport.
Before booking, check one-way car or transfer costs, flight times and the order of accommodation. Each airport transfer should be confirmed separately with its own flight, address, passengers and luggage.
Families, groups and specialist equipment
Long coastal travel is easier when the vehicle fits the real load. Declare pushchairs, wheelchairs, diving cases, hiking packs, bicycles, sailing bags and child-seat needs. Different flight arrivals may justify separate vehicles instead of a long terminal wait. A group staying at multiple villas should list every address.
Aslar Travel uses private vehicles, flight monitoring and fixed-price confirmation for both airports. TURSAB licensing and 20 years of local experience support the operation, but the best recommendation still begins with honest flight and itinerary details.
A simple decision checklist
- Choose Dalaman first for Fethiye, Ölüdeniz, Kalkan, Patara and usually Kas.
- Choose Antalya first for Çıralı, Olympos, Adrasan, Demre and eastern coastal itineraries.
- Compare both airports when travelling only to Kas or Kalkan, especially if one offers a direct flight.
- Consider different arrival and departure airports for a one-way coastal route.
- Confirm the complete address, not only the resort name, before comparing transfer time and price.
Final details to confirm before travel
Review the flight number, passenger names, mobile contact, full pickup and drop-off addresses, luggage and requested seats before confirming. For a return journey, check the departure flight separately rather than copying the arrival information. Keep the booking confirmation accessible while travelling and notify support promptly if the airline, accommodation or party size changes.
The fixed price applies to the written route and service scope. Clear information about additional stops, several properties or specialist equipment prevents last-minute uncertainty and helps the driver deliver the private airport transfer as planned through a TURSAB-licensed service.
Frequently asked questions
Is Dalaman always better for Kas?
No. It is normally closer by road, but a direct Antalya flight may produce a better overall itinerary.
Can one airport be used for arrival and the other for departure?
Yes. Book the two journeys separately with both flight numbers.
